Getting Started
To get started in DSC 140A, you'll need to set up accounts on a couple of websites.
Campuswire
We'll be using Campuswire as our course message board. You should have received an invitation via email, but if not you should be able to join by clicking the link above and using your UCSD email address to sign up. Be sure sure to join Campuswire as soon as possible, since all course communication will be done through it.
If you have a question about anything to do with the course — if you're stuck on a homework problem, want clarification on the logistics, or just have a general question about data science — you can make a post on Campuswire. We only ask that if your question includes some or all of an answer, please make your post private so that others cannot see it. You can also post anonymously if you would prefer.
Course staff will regularly check Campuswire and try to answer any questions that you have. You're also encouraged to answer a question asked by another student if you feel that you know the answer.
Gradescope

homework submission and grading. Most of the assignments will be a mixture of math and
coding, and the coding parts are usually autograded via Gradescope.,

We will not be using Canvas. All course materials will be available at dsc140a.com or Gradescope.
Required Materials
You will not need to purchase any materials for this course. We'll use lecture slides as our main resource. You might also find it useful to dig up your textbook/notes from your linear algebra course (MATH 18), your multivariate calculus course (MATH 20C), your probability/statistics course(s) (e.g., MATH 183), and DSC 40A, since this course relies heavily on those prerequisites.
That said, if you are looking for some additional resources, here are some classic textbooks; the first is freely available as a PDF:

Lectures
Lectures will be held in-person at the regularly-scheduled time and place, but they will be podcasted and posted online for remote viewing. Attendance is appreciated, but not required.
There are two lecture sections:
- 11:00 AM on T/Th in CENTR 212
- 3:30 PM on T/Th in CENTR 113
After Week 02, you may attend whichever lecture section you like, but you should take the midterm in the section that you're officially enrolled in.
You will be able to find the lecture recordings at podcast.ucsd.edu.
Office Hours
Course staff, including tutors, TAs, and instructors, will hold office hours regularly throughout the week. Please see the office hours page for the schedule and for instructions.
Discussions
Because there are two lecture sections, there are two discussion sections as well:
- 5:00 PM on Friday in CENTR 216
- 7:00 PM on Monday in CENTR 212
The discussions review the materials from that week's lectures and prepare you for the homework. Just as with lecture, topics and techniques introduced in discussion might appear on the homework and in exams. In particular, some of the more difficult homework problems may be partially solved in discussion section to give you a good start.
Discussions will also serve as midterm reviews in the weeks leading up to the exams.
Attendance is recommended, but not required. The discussions will be podcasted, but the nature of discussion section (they are centered around groupwork) means that the podcasted discussion might not be as useful as in-person attendance.
Labs
There will be two types of assignments in DSC 140A: labs and homeworks. Labs help develop essential knowledge, while homeworks test your ability to apply that knowledge to solve more difficult problems. You can think of labs as a quick check on your understanding before you head into the homework.
Labs consist of a small number of autograded multiple choice or numerical answer questions. They will be posted on Gradescope weekly. The exams will mostly consist of questions of a similar format and difficulty as those on the labs. However, the exams will have a time limit, while the labs have no time limit.
In previous iterations of DSC 140A, these "essential" questions were actually a part of the homeworks. We have decided to move these essential problems to their own lab assignment, therefore making the homeworks shorter. This has a big benefit: because the labs are autograded and due before the homeworks, you'll get your lab grade before heading into the homework. This gives you an opportunity to patch up any misunderstandings.
Lab Redemptions
You should think of the labs as a first practice towards the goal of mastering the topics in DSC 140A. But the first time you practice anything, you're not going to be perfect. The key is to learn from the mistakes.
To encourage this, DSC 140A uses the concept of "redemption" on lab assignments. Under this policy, you may regain 85% of the credit for a lab problem that was previously answered incorrectly by submitting an explanation of your mistake along with a correction. This policy encourages you to revisit lab mistakes in order to correct your understanding, and allows us to give quick, targeted feedback through grading.
For a problem to be eligible for redemption, you must have submitted an answer to the problem.
If you got the problem correct, you'll receive the total number of points for it. If you didn't get the problem correct, even due to a relatively small mistake, you'll receive no credit until you submit a redemption request (see below). If your redemption request is accepted, you'll be given 85% of the credit for the problem. You can think of the 15% deduction as the cost of requiring a tutor to look over your redemption request — or, if you're a glass-half-full kind of person, as an incentive to get the problem correct the first time around.
Redemption Requests
There are two ways to submit a redemption request for a lab problem:
- Option 1. Come to any tutor, TA, or instructor office hours and discuss the problem (preferred)
- Option 2. Submit a regrade request on Gradescope.
Whichever method you choose, you should answer the following questions:
- What was the main misconception or misunderstanding that led to your answer being wrong?
- How did this misconception cause the wrong answer?
- How does fixing the misunderstanding lead you to the right answer?
The next section contains an example of a good redemption request.
The amount of detail needed in your request depends on how complex your mistake was; if it was a simple one, only one or two sentences may be necessary. A grader will review your request shortly (as long as you submit it within a week of the homework scores being posted, your regrade request will be reviewed). If you aren't able to identify what you did incorrectly, you'll be asked to attend a grader's office hours in order to discuss the problem in more detail.
Note that we will not be able to handle redemption requests which are submitted more than a week after you have received your grade. However, as long as your request is submitted within a week, we will process it.
Example
Here's a simple example to demonstrate the redemption process. Suppose you're given the following simple problem:
Question: What is 3 + 5 * 2
?
Let's say you misapplied the order of operations, giving you an incorrect answer of 16 (the correct answer is, of course, 13). Here's a good redemption request that uses the template above:
1) I misapplied the order of operations. 2) I added before multiplying, so I got (3 + 5) * 2 = 8 * 2 = 16. 3) Multiplication should be done first so that we get 3 + (5 * 2) = 3 + 10 = 13.
Again, the key isn't just giving the right answer — that's published in the solutions, after all. The important part (according to the research) is identifying why you made the mistake.
Homeworks
There will be eight homeworks assigned throughout the quarter, plus one "super homework" (described below). Homeworks will be a mixture of written problems (which are manually graded by our tutor staff) and coding problems (which are autograded). Each homework will be due via Gradescope at 11:59 PM on the Wednesday after it is assigned except otherwise noted, and you'll have roughly a week to complete each assignment from the time it is posted.
The homework due date is carefully chosen to fit within a one week "cycle". A "week" in DSC 140A will start with Tuesday's lecture, followed by Thursday's. The lab is then due on Sunday, giving you some practice before the homework. That week's discussion on Friday will review the lecture topics with an eye towards practical application. The homework is then due on Wednesday, giving you some time after the discussion and lab to complete it.
The single lowest homework will be dropped. See "Grading" below for exactly how this is done.
Regrade Requests
If you feel that the grader has made a mistake, you may submit a regrade request via Gradescope within one week of the grades being released. Note that part of your grade is clarity, so if your answer was mostly right but unclear you may still not receive full credit.
Note that regrade requests are not the same thing as redemption requests (though both are submitted on Gradescope in the same way). Unfortunately, we cannot offer redemption requests for homework problems as we do with lab problems — homework problems are typically more complex and require more time to grade, and regrading them would take more resources than we have available.
Catastrophic Autograder Regrades
Some of the homework problems are autograded. The autograder is very picky: it expects your assignments to have exactly the correct file names, all functions must be named correctly, etc. If these are wrong, your code may not run and the autograder may assign zero points. This is a grading catastrophe 😧.
Grading catastrophes are preventable! After submitting your assignment, always wait around to see the output of the Gradescope grader and ensure that it runs properly. Also, be sure to submit your assignment (or at least part of it) to Gradescope with enough time before the deadline to get help if there is a strange autograder problem.
In the case that you submit code that doesn't run and discover this at a later date, you have some options:
- If it is still before the late deadline, you may use a slip day to fix your code and re-submit. Note that you're free to do this even if your code runs -- this is just making use of the normal slip day mechanism to submit an assignment late.
- If it is past the late deadline and your code requires only minor fixes (e.g., the file name is wrong) we will fix your code at the cost of two slip days. You must have at least two remaining slip days to use this option!
- If you don't have enough slip days remaining, you'll get a zero on that part of the assignment, but since the lowest homework score is dropped, it might not affect your grade.
To submit a catastrophic regrade request, please make a private post on the messageboard.
The "Super Homework"
Instead of a comprehensive final exam, we'll have a comprehensive "Super Homework". The super homework will focus on the content from the last two weeks of the quarter, but it will also contain material from throughout DSC 140A. It will be about twice as long as a typical homework.
Because the super homework covers twice as much material as a usual homework, it will be worth roughly twice as much. However, you may still collaborate on the super homework as long as you write up solutions in your own words.
The super homework will be due during finals week (the exact date is yet to be determined).
Collaboration and AI
You are highly encouraged to think about the lab and homework problems together, but you must turn in your own solutions written in your own words. We feel that discussing homework problems is an excellent way to learn, but writing the solutions in your own words promotes a deeper, more solid understanding than discussion alone.
We recommend the following way of working on the labs and homeworks. First, meet with your partner to discuss the solutions, but don't leave the meeting with anything written down. Wait an hour or so, then write up the solutions in your own words working from memory. In that hour, you inevitably forgot some of the details of the solution. If you find that you have trouble filling them in, its a sign that you might not have understood the solution as well as you first thought!
You're also encouraged to use AI (ChatGPT, etc.) in a similar way: you can talk to ChatGPT about a problem, but don't copy its answer verbatim. Instead, wait about an hour and put the answer in your own words. Keep in mind that ChatGPT is infamous for being very confidently wrong, so be critical of its output. Also keep in mind that you won't have ChatGPT on the exams, so you'll need to understand the fundamental concepts for yourself in order to do well.

Slip Days
You have five "slip days" to use throughout the quarter on any lab or homework (including the super homework). A slip day extends the deadline by 24 hours. Slip days cannot be "stacked" or "combined" to extend the deadline further — the latest any assignment can be submitted is 24 hours after the deadline. Slip days are applied automatically at the end of the quarter, but it's your responsibility to keep track of how many you have left.
Slip days are designed to be a transparent and predictable source of leniency in deadlines. You can use a slip day if you are too busy to complete an assignment on its original due date (or if you forgot about it). But slips days are also meant for things like the internet going down at 11:58 PM just as you go to submit your homework. Slip days are to be used in exceptional circumstances, so you probably shouldn't get close to using all of them — if you do get close to using that many, we will likely reach out to make sure that everything is OK.
Note that slip days are not designed to help in the case of a serious illness or other unfortunate event that severely disrupts your ability to participate in the class. If something like that should arise, please let us know ASAP!
If you submit more assignments late than you have slip days, some of them will be given zero credit. However, we'll automatically apply slip days in the way that most benefits your overall grade. For example, if you turn in the Super HW late without any slip days remaining, it probably won't be counted as a zero -- instead, our grading code will apply the first slip day to the Super HW, the second slip day to the second most valuable assignment, and so on.
Exams
Midterms
There will be two midterm exams:
- Midterm 01: Thursday, February 06 (focuses on Lectures 01 — 08)
- Midterm 02: Thursday, March 06 (focuses on Lectures 09 — 15)
The exams will be held in-person during the regularly-scheduled lecture times.
Note that the official course schedule lists special out-of-class exam times for the two midterms: you can disregard these times. The exams will be held during the regularly-scheduled lecture times. You should take the exam in the lecture section that you are officially enrolled in.
Final Exam (a.k.a., the "Redemption Exams")
The final exam for DSC 140A is a "no fault" final split into two sections:
- An optional Midterm 01 "Redemption" section focusing on Lectures 01 — 08
- An optional Midterm 02 "Redemption" section focusing on Lectures 09 — 15
If your score on the midterm redemption section is higher than your score on the original midterm, it will replace that grade. Getting a lower score on a redemption section cannot hurt you (but it will make us sad). As a consequence, the redemption sections are effectively optional.
Under this policy, a bad performance on an earlier exam can be erased by good performance on the same material in a later exam.
Example: You got an "F" on Midterm 1 and a "B" on Midterm 2. You decide to take only the first redemption section on the final (though you could have taken both), and you receive an "A". Your midterm scores are now "A" and "B".
The redemption exams will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 11:30 AM.
Note that the topics from Lectures 16, 17, and 18 are not on any exam. These will instead be tested in the Super Homework.
Notes and Calculators
You are permitted one page of notes (front and back) for the exams. For the redemption exams, you can have one sheet per exam (if you're taking one exam, you can have one sheet; if you're taking both exams, you can have two).
The exams will be designed so that you do not need a calculator, but you are allowed to use one if you'd like. If you do, it shouldn't be able to connect to the internet or otherwise communicate with other devices. Namely, you can't use your phone as a calculator.
Grading
We'll be using the following grading scheme:
- 12.5%: Labs
- 30%: Homeworks (lowest dropped)
- 7.5%: "Super Homework"
- 25%: Midterm 01 (or Redemption Midterm 01, whichever is larger)
- 25%: Midterm 02 (or Redemption Midterm 02, whichever is larger)
In a typical quarter, the midterm redemption policy has the same effect as a traditional "curve", therefore replacing the need for one. The standard grading scale (where an A is 93+, A- is 90+, B+ is 87+, etc.) will be used as a starting point, but once all scores are in, we will run a clustering algorithm to automatically find the best cutoffs for each letter grade. These cutoffs can only be lowered. For instance, the threshold for an "A" will never be higher than 93%.
A+ grades are not awarded according to a threshold. Instead, A+'s are awarded to the top 5% of students by overall grade.
Calculating your grade: when calculating your lab and homework grades, you should weigh each assignment by the points possible on that assignment. In other words, some homeworks and labs are worth more, and some are worth less. This is by design, since some assignments are intentionally shorter.
The "lowest" homework is dropped (for this purpose, the Super Homework is not considered a homework, and it cannot be dropped). To be precise, we drop the homework that has the biggest negative impact on your overall grade. This is determined by dropping each homework in turn and recalculating your overall grade. The homework that, when dropped, increases your overall grade the most is the one that is actually dropped. Note that this is not necessarily the homework that has the lowest percentage score, because not all homeworks are worth the same amount.
To see why this is the case, suppose you have three homeworks with scores of: 0/5, 7/10, and 30/100 (in actuality, they won't be worth such different amounts). Dropping the homework with the lowest percentage (the first one) gives you an overall homework grade of (7 + 30)/(10 + 100) = 33.6%. But the better thing to do is actually to drop the third homework, in which case your overall score is (0 + 7)/(5 + 10) = 46.6%. This is what the grading algorithm in this class will do.
The above gives you all of the information you need to calculate your grade at any point in the quarter. That said, any grade calculation done before all assignments are graded is necessarily an estimate of your final overall grade -- and estimates have errors. We don't compute your overall grade until the end of the quarter because it can be misleading. However, we will provide you with a full grade report once all grades are in.
In particular, you will need to decide whether or not to take the redemption exams before the Super HW is graded. If you're worried about your grade, we advise you to take the redemption exams regardless of your current grade in the course -- they can only help you.
Exceptions
The policies outlined in this syllabus are designed to be fair and transparent, but it might not always be clear why they exist. In general, there are three reasons:

Educational. Some policies encourage learning. For instance, the redemption policy encourages you to learn from your mistakes.

Leniency. Some policies are designed to give you a break. For example, if you're particularly busy and just forget to turn in your homework, you can use a slip day to avoid any late penalty.

To help the class run smoothly. Running a class with 100+ students is a logistical challenge. Most of the policies in this syllabus are in place simply to ensure that it's possible to run the class at all. For instance, if I were teaching two or three students at a time, there wouldn't be a need to have a set homework deadline. But any more than that, and deadlines are necessary to prevent the class from being a logistical nightmare.
Many policies exist due to a combination of these three reasons. For instance, the redemption policy is educational (it rewards you for learning from your mistakes) and lenient (it gives you a second chance). But it also helps the class run smoothly. For instance, suppose you are invited to an out-of-town family event scheduled for the week of the midterm. If the redemption policy didn't exist, you might ask to take a make-up exam (which requires a surprising amount of extra work from the course staff to facilitate). But with the redemption policy, you can simply skip the midterm and take the redemption exam instead. In fact, in a typical quarter, about 5% of students will skip the midterm and take only the redemption exam.
In other words, the policies in this syllabus are designed to accommodate for all of the smaller mishaps and unexpected events that can happen in a quarter. This provides slack not only for you as students, but also for the course staff by minimizing the number of one-off exceptions. To think of it another way, you don't need to ask for exceptions in DSC 140A -- you can grant them to yourself by using the slip day, homework drop, and redemption policies.
That said, there are exceptions to every rule, and the policies are only designed to handle the small stuff. If you have a bigger situation that you think might warrant an exception, please let us know. Examples might include a serious illness, accident, or a family emergency. In such cases, please contact us so we can help!

OSD Exam Accommodations
If you have exam accommodations from the OSD, be sure to send your AFA letter early in the quarter. We will use the Triton Testing Center for your exam. When scheduling your exam, you may see availability on several days -- please schedule your exam for the same day as the in-class exam, and at an earlier time (if possible). If it isn't possible to schedule an exam for the same day, please let us know.
Please schedule your exams at the TTC as soon as possible to ensure that you get a spot. You will see four exams on the TTC website: Midterm 01, Midterm 02, and the two redemption exams (Redemption Midterm 01 and Redemption Midterm 02). You should sign up for all four at the beginning of the quarter.
FAQs
Is this class curved?

These cutoffs can only be lowered. For instance, the threshold for an "A" will never be higher than 93%.
Can I take the exams remotely or take a make-up exam?
The exams will be held in-person during the regularly-scheduled lecture times, and exceptions to this are pretty rare. This is mostly because the process of writing, running, and grading exams is maybe the most time-consuming part of running a class during a regular quarter, and make-up exams require a surprising amount of additional work from the course staff to facilitate. It's also hard to fairly decide whose situation warrants a make-up exam, and whose doesn't. At the same time, redemption exams provide basically the same result as make-up exams, but for everyone -- and almost "for free".
If you will be out of town or otherwise unable to take the exam in-person and your situation doesn't qualify for an exception, you should plan on using the exam redemption policy. That is, if you have to miss a midterm, you can skip it and use the redemption exam as your make-up. On the other hand, if you foresee being unable to take the redemption exams in-person (for example, because you're starting an internship early), you should plan on taking both midterms -- the redemption policy makes the final exam effectively optional, and so you can skip it.
I'm sick and I don't know if I can turn the homework or lab this week. Can I get an exception?
If the average person gets a minor illness (like a cold) three times a year, then around 40–60% of the students in typical college class will get sick at least once in a 10 week quarter. For a large class like this one, that means a hundred illnesses (or more) in a given quarter. Because of this, it's necessary to design policies that accommodate for minor illnesses without needing to make exceptions. In this class, the slip days, homework drop, and redemption policies are all designed to provide leniency for the small illnesses that might put you out for a day or two.
On the other hand, if you are very sick (something sidelining you for a week or more), absolutely please let us know so that we can discuss accommodations! We will ask for a doctor's note for documentation, but also just to ensure that you're getting proper medical attention and are connected with college resources that can support you. If you're too sick to participate in this class, it's likely that you're also too sick to participate in your other classes, and Student Affairs can help you coordinate with your other professors.
I'm close to the next grade up. Can you round my grade or give me extra work to increase my grade?
No. We do not change grades for individual students. We also can't give you a special opportunity (like extra work) to increase your grade. To do this in good conscience, we would have to offer the same opportunity to everyone else, and if even 10% of the class took us up on it, that would be a huge amount of extra grading work for the course staff with little time to do it before the quarter ends (on top of all of the grading for the final exam and super homework).
We do like the idea of second opportunities to show mastery of the material, though, and that is one of the big motivations behind both the lab and exam redemption policies.
